The task

The Center for Ethics in Science and Science Journalism (CESJ) co-leads WP1 and serves as a central point for ethical oversight and coordination. In collaboration with the independent Ethics Advisory Board (EAB), WP1 ensures ethical compliance in the following areas:

  • The involvement of vulnerable populations, especially cancer patients.
  • The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) for health-related information.
  • The management of sensitive personal data.

CESJ also supports project partners in obtaining the necessary ethical approvals, particularly for the validation of localised versions of the information portal by patient associations and other stakeholders.

In addition to its role in WP1, CESJ will integrate WP1 ethics-related contributions with outcomes from tasks it leads in other work packages, including:

  • The Ethical, Legal, and Societal Impact (ELSI) analysis;
  • The Anticipatory Technology Ethics (ATE) assessments, which help identify and address potential future risks associated with technological development.

These activities ensure that innovation is aligned with societal values and legal requirements, promoting long-term responsibility and public trust. CESJ also contributes to defining quality standards, supports the usability and accessibility evaluation of the information portal, and in the creation and validation of content to ensure it is ethically sound, clear, and relevant for all user groups.
